How do I size a water softener for my home?

How much do water softeners cost in the U.S.?

How much salt will I use per month?

It depends on your capacity, hardness load, and efficiency setting. Typical efficiency is 3,000–4,000 grains per lb. Multiply grains removed between regenerations by your efficiency to get lb salt per regen, then by regenerations per month. Many homes see roughly 20–60 lb/month (0.5–1.5 bags of 40 lb), but your usage may differ.

How much water does regeneration use?

A common rule of thumb is ~60 gallons per cubic foot of resin per regeneration (varies by valve and settings). Example: a 1.5 cu ft system may use ~90 gallons each regen. Our estimator shows your gallons per regen and monthly totals.

Do I need an iron filter?

We flag iron around ≥0.3 mg/L as a threshold to consider pretreatment. Iron can foul resin and raise salt/water use. If iron is present (especially on wells), a dedicated iron filter before the softener is often recommended.

What about salt-free conditioners?

Salt-free systems (e.g., TAC) condition minerals to reduce scale adhesion but do not remove hardness. They’re sized by flow/bathrooms, have no regeneration salt/water, and typically cost similar to mid-range softeners. They won’t deliver “0 gpg” soft water for laundry/spots.

How often should my softener regenerate?

Many homes target about every 7 days with a small reserve (~10–20%). High use, higher hardness, or low efficiency can push it to every 3–5 days; lighter use can stretch to 10–14 days. Our estimator lets you set preferred days and shows the trade-offs.

How do I check my water hardness and iron?

Use a home hardness test (gpg) and, if on a well, consider a basic lab panel for iron, manganese, pH, TDS. If you’re on city water, look up your utility’s latest water quality report and confirm at the tap with a strip or meter.

How long do softeners last?

Quality valves often run 10–15 years with service. Resin life depends on water chemistry; 8–12 years is common, shorter with iron/chlorine exposure (pretreatment helps). Check warranty terms on valve, tank, and media.

Where does backwash water go? Any code issues?

Regeneration water is discharged to a standpipe, floor drain, or approved receptor per local code; some areas require an air gap and restrict discharge to septic. Always check local permitting and installer guidance.
