Is Tap Water Safe to Drink in Your City? (2026)
Municipal water in the United States is regulated by the EPA and tested continuously, and the headline result is reassuring: the cities on this page all met their federal standards in 2025. What a citywide average cannot tell you is what comes out of your tap. Lead almost always enters the water after it leaves the treatment plant, through service lines and household plumbing, which is why a city can pass its compliance testing while a single home tests high.
Each guide below works from the city’s own published water quality report and covers the same four things: what the official testing found, which numbers sit close to their limits, what it means for filtering, and whether hardness is high enough to justify a softener.

The Four Numbers That Actually Matter
Whichever city you are in, the same four measurements decide what — if anything — you should do about your water.
This is the one number a citywide report cannot answer for you. Lead comes from service lines and household plumbing, so it varies house by house. NYC’s citywide result is fine, yet one tap tested at 155 µg/L. If your building predates 1986, test rather than assume.
Not a health issue, but it decides whether a softener is worth the money. NYC at 2 gpg needs nothing. Phoenix at up to 17.6 gpg and San Diego at 14.2 gpg are firmly in softener territory.
A trade-off from chlorination, which is itself protective. San Diego reached 87 ppb and NYC 81 ppb against an 80 ppb limit — worth knowing, and reducible with a carbon filter.
Highly variable. LA and Chicago came back undetected; DC detected PFOS at 1.7 ppt. Only a certified filter meaningfully removes it.
How to Check Your Own Water
- Read your city’s annual report. Every US utility publishes a Consumer Confidence Report each year with the full testing data. The city guides above summarise the 2025 editions.
- Test your own tap for lead. The citywide number tells you about the treatment plant, not your pipes. This matters most in older buildings.
- Check hardness before buying anything. A softener is a real expense and pointless in a soft-water city.
- Match the filter to the actual problem. Carbon handles taste, chlorine and TTHM. PFAS and lead need certified reverse osmosis or a specific lead-rated filter.
