But in context these are high. Chicago’s TTHM was 26.4 µg/L and Los Angeles 33.8 µg/L — NYC runs roughly double Chicago. The reason is structural: trihalomethanes form when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic matter, and NYC’s water travels up to 125 miles from unfiltered upstate reservoirs, carrying more organic material and spending more time in contact with disinfectant than water from a filtration plant a few miles away.
Where NYC Tap Water Comes From
