Halloween Mocktails With Sparkling Water: 7 Easy Recipes

Easy Halloween mocktails with sparkling water for kids and adults: seven recipes, a punch for a crowd, the sparkling water we use and the sugar in each.

Halloween Mocktails With Sparkling Water: 7 Easy Recipes

The easiest Halloween mocktails with sparkling water are two parts juice to six parts plain sparkling water, poured over ice in a glass dressed up for the night. That ratio keeps the color dark and spooky, the drink fizzy, and the sugar far below a soda. A 12-ounce can of Sprite carries about 32 grams of sugar, by USDA figures. Our apple cider fizz below has about 6.

We pulled together seven recipes we would actually serve: some for kids, some for adults who skip alcohol, plus one big-batch punch. Each one names the juice, the amount, and the sugar it adds.

Can you make mocktails with sparkling water?

Yes, and in our view it is the best base for them. Plain sparkling water adds bubbles with no sugar and no flavor of its own, so the juice, spice or syrup you add does all the work. Soda does the opposite: it brings its own sweetness and taste, and both crowd out the Halloween colors and flavors you are going for.

Club soda and seltzer work the same way. If you are not sure how they differ, our guide to seltzer vs club soda vs sparkling vs mineral water explains it. Tonic water is a different drink: it is sweetened and bitter, as we cover in what is tonic water, so we keep it out of kids’ glasses.

What is a good sparkling water for mocktails?

We use a plain, unflavored sparkling water that tested low for PFAS. Flavored cans fight the juice, and plain ones let you control the taste.

Consumer Reports’ 2020 tests are the only published lab numbers we know of for carbonated water PFAS. Among the brands with reported levels, Spindrift came in at 0.19 parts per trillion, Sanpellegrino at 0.31, Perrier at 1.1 and LaCroix at 1.16, while Topo Chico measured 9.76 and Polar 6.41. Sparkling Ice had none detected. Our page on sparkling water without PFAS covers the full results, and our ranking of plain sparkling water covers taste and price.

What are some good Halloween mocktails with sparkling water?

These are our seven. Each makes one drink in a 12- to 16-ounce glass. Fill the glass with ice first, add the juice, then top with sparkling water so the bubbles survive. Sugar figures come from USDA FoodData Central values for each juice and count the juice only.

1. Poison apple fizz

2 oz apple cider, 6 oz plain sparkling water, a squeeze of lime, a cinnamon stick, and a thin red apple slice. About 6 g of sugar. This is our pick for a first-timer: it tastes like fall and needs nothing you would not already have.

2. Witch’s brew

2 oz 100% grape juice, 6 oz sparkling water, and a few gummy worms hanging over the rim. About 8.5 g of sugar, before the gummies. The deep purple does the spooky part for you.

3. Vampire bite

2 oz 100% pomegranate juice, 6 oz sparkling water, and a lime wedge. About 7.6 g of sugar. For the “blood drip,” run a little corn syrup tinted with red food coloring around the rim and let it run down. That adds sugar, so skip it for a lighter glass.

4. Black cherry cauldron

2 oz tart cherry juice, 6 oz sparkling water, and a few frozen dark cherries as ice. About 7.3 g of sugar. Tart cherry is the least sweet of the juices here, so this is the one we pour for adults.

5. Pumpkin spice fizz

1 tablespoon canned pumpkin puree, 2 oz apple cider, a pinch of pumpkin pie spice, and 6 oz sparkling water. Shake the pumpkin, cider and spice with ice first, strain into the glass, then top with the sparkling water. It answers a question Google shows in its “People also ask” box, “how do you make a pumpkin mocktail,” and needs no syrup.

6. Ghost lime float

Juice of half a lime, 1 teaspoon honey stirred in to dissolve, 7 oz sparkling water, and a small scoop of vanilla ice cream floating on top as the “ghost.” This one is for kids, and the ice cream is the treat, so treat it like dessert.

A glass punch bowl of apple cider and grape juice graveyard punch with sparkling water, apple slices and orange wheels on a Halloween table
Graveyard punch: mix the juices ahead and add the sparkling water when guests arrive.

7. Graveyard punch (for a crowd)

4 cups apple cider, 2 cups 100% grape juice, and one 1-liter bottle of sparkling water, added at the last minute. Float apple slices and orange wheels on top. It fills about 12 short glasses. Add the sparkling water only when guests arrive, because it goes flat in an open bowl.

What are easy Halloween mocktails for kids?

The witch’s brew, the poison apple fizz and the ghost lime float. All three use one juice, no shaker and no special syrup. Let kids drop in the gummy worms or the ice cream themselves, which is half the fun.

Keep the sparkling water plain and unsweetened for kids. If you worry about bubbles and teeth, our page on whether sparkling water is bad for your teeth walks through what the research shows.

How do you make a low-sugar fall mocktail?

Use less juice and more sparkling water. Dropping from 2 oz of juice to 1 oz halves the sugar, and the drink still holds its color. For flavor without sugar, lean on spices, citrus peel and herbs: a cinnamon stick, an orange twist, a sprig of rosemary.

Here is how the juices compare per 100 grams, from USDA FoodData Central, so you can pick the lightest base:

Mixer Sugar per 100 g Sugar in a 2 oz pour (approx.)
Plain sparkling water 0 g 0 g
Apple cider 9.62 g 5.8 g
Tart cherry juice 12.2 g 7.3 g
Pomegranate juice, 100% 12.65 g 7.6 g
Grape juice, 100% 14.24 g 8.5 g
Sprite (lemon-lime soda), for comparison 8.98 g about 32 g in a 12 oz can

Two ounces is about 60 grams, so the pour column is close but not exact. For more no-sugar ideas that work all year, see our infused water recipes and our list of sugar-free sparkling water.

What are good Halloween mocktail names?

Name the drink after what it looks like, and the guests do the rest. The names above, poison apple, witch’s brew, vampire bite, cauldron and graveyard punch, all tell you the color before you see it. Write them on small cards by the punch bowl so nobody has to ask what is in each glass.
