Is Evian Water Good for You? What Its 2025 Lab Test Shows

Is Evian water good for you? Its 2025 NSF test found no PFAS, arsenic or lead, and real calcium and magnesium. It is also very hard water. What that means.

Is Evian Water Good for You? What Its 2025 Lab Test Shows

Is Evian water good for you? Yes, in our view it is one of the better bottled waters: its 2025 test by the independent lab NSF found no detectable PFAS, arsenic or lead, and it carries real amounts of calcium and magnesium. The catches are price, the plastic bottle, and one surprise most people do not expect: by the standard hardness scale, Evian is very hard water.

Below are the actual numbers from Evian’s 2025 report, what they mean for your daily minerals, the 2020 pesticide finding, and how Evian compares with other brands.

Is Evian water good for you compared with other bottled waters?

On published data, it is near the top. Evian posts its full annual water quality report, which includes an NSF test of over 175 substances. The 2025 report covers a sample taken on January 30, 2025, and NSF marked the result “PASS” against FDA’s bottled water standards.

Evian is natural spring water from the Cachat Spring in the French Alps. Evian says rain and snow take “at least 15 years” to filter through glacial sand before reaching the spring, and that it is bottled only at the source. Unlike purified waters such as Aquafina, nothing is removed and nothing is added, so its minerals come from the rock.

What is in Evian water?

Here are the main results from NSF’s 2025 test, with our math for one 500 mL bottle:

Measure Per liter (NSF 2025) Per 500 mL bottle Share of daily value (our math)
Calcium 81 mg 40.5 mg About 3% of 1,300 mg
Magnesium 26 mg 13 mg About 3% of 420 mg
Sodium 7.1 mg 3.6 mg Under 0.2% of 2,300 mg
Potassium 1.1 mg 0.6 mg Negligible
Chloride 11 mg 5.5 mg
Sulfate 13 mg 6.5 mg
Total dissolved solids 340 mg 170 mg
Hardness (as calcium carbonate) 310 mg
pH 7.95

Daily values are from FDA’s nutrition label table. Drinking a liter and a half of Evian a day would give you roughly 120 mg of calcium and 39 mg of magnesium, about 9% of each daily value. That is a small but real contribution, more than most purified or soft spring waters offer.

Is Evian hard water?

Yes, very hard. NSF measured total hardness at 310 mg/L as calcium carbonate. The U.S. Geological Survey calls anything over 180 mg/L “very hard,” so Evian is well past that line; in the grains per gallon used for softeners, it is about 18. Hard water is not a health problem to drink, and the calcium and magnesium that make it hard are the same minerals in the table above. It does mean Evian will leave scale in a kettle faster than soft water. Our guide to hard water vs soft water explains the difference.

Is Evian water safe to drink every day?

Yes. In the 2025 test, NSF found no detectable arsenic, lead, antimony or bromate. Nitrate was 0.88 mg/L against FDA’s limit of 10, and uranium, which occurs naturally in rock, was 0.002 mg/L against a limit of 0.03. We found no Evian recall in FDA’s food enforcement database.

On PFAS, the report lists 18 compounds, including PFOA, PFOS and GenX, all “ND,” not detected, at a reporting limit of 2 parts per trillion. In our reading, that is one of the more detailed PFAS disclosures from a bottled water brand. Our page on whether Evian has PFAS covers the history, and our list of bottled water without PFAS compares brands.

What about the pesticide found in Evian?

In 2020, researchers at Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, reported finding the banned fungicide chlorothalonil in Evian. Swissinfo reported the amount as “six nanogrammes of the banned pesticide per litre,” which it described as “well below the legal limits and is not harmful to health.” The finding drew attention mainly because Evian’s source is so remote; it shows how far agricultural chemicals can travel, not that the water is unsafe.

What are the downsides of Evian?

  • Price. A 24-pack of 500 mL bottles was about $33 on Amazon when we checked in November 2026, roughly $1.40 a bottle.
  • Plastic. Amazon’s listing says the bottles contain “up to 35% recycled plastic.” Plastic bottles shed tiny particles; our guide to microplastics in bottled water covers the research.
  • No fluoride. NSF found none detected, while CDC recommends about 0.7 mg/L in community water for children’s teeth.
  • Distance. It is shipped from France.

Is Evian water good for your kidneys?

For healthy people, staying hydrated with any safe water supports the kidneys, and Evian is low in sodium at 7.1 mg per liter. Its calcium is higher than Fiji’s or any purified water’s. If you have kidney disease, kidney stones or a doctor’s limit on fluids or minerals, ask your doctor which water fits; our guide on water and kidney stones covers what research says about mineral water.

Is Evian better than Fiji?

They are close on safety. Evian has more calcium and magnesium (81 and 26 mg/L against Fiji’s 18 and 14 in its 2026 report) and publishes a detailed PFAS panel; Fiji has far more silica, which Fiji credits for its smooth taste. Our Fiji review and Fiji vs smartwater vs Evian comparison go deeper, and our ranking of the safest bottled water brands puts it in context.

Frequently asked questions

Is Evian water good for you?

Yes. Its 2025 NSF test found no detectable PFAS, arsenic or lead, and it has 81 mg/L calcium and 26 mg/L magnesium. Its main downsides are price and the plastic bottle.

Is Evian water safe to drink every day?

Yes. It passed NSF’s 2025 test against FDA bottled water standards, and we found no recall of Evian in FDA’s enforcement database.

What is the pH of Evian?

NSF measured pH 7.95 in the January 2025 sample. Evian’s labels list 7.2. Both are close to neutral.

Does Evian have PFAS?

Evian’s 2025 report lists 18 PFAS compounds, including PFOA and PFOS, as not detected at a 2 parts per trillion reporting limit.

Is Evian hard water?

Yes. NSF measured 310 mg/L hardness as calcium carbonate, which the U.S. Geological Survey classes as very hard. That comes from calcium and magnesium, which are fine to drink.

Is Evian good for your kidneys?

It is low in sodium and, for healthy people, fine for hydration. People with kidney disease or stones should ask their doctor, since Evian is higher in calcium than purified waters.
